Bandage

Definition: Material used to hold a dressing in place, support an injury, or apply pressure to control bleeding. Bandages come in many shapes and sizes, from adhesive strips (like Band-Aids) to rolled gauze, elastic wraps, and pressure bandages for more serious wounds.

Parent Tip: The right bandage depends on the injury. Adhesive strips work for small cuts and scrapes. Rolled gauze with medical tape is better for larger wounds or areas that move a lot, like elbows and knees. Elastic wraps support sprains and strains. For heavier bleeding, you want a pressure bandage that lets you apply firm, steady pressure on top of a clean dressing. A well stocked children's first aid kit should have several types so you are ready for whatever the day brings.

Why It Matters: A bandage does more than cover an injury. It keeps the wound clean, reduces the chance of infection, controls bleeding, and protects the area while it heals. Using the wrong type, or wrapping a bandage too tight, can actually slow healing or cut off circulation, so it helps to know the basics before you need them.
