First Aid Kit

Definition: A collection of supplies kept ready to treat injuries and minor medical emergencies until professional help arrives or healing is complete. A children's first aid kit is built specifically with pediatric needs in mind, since the supplies, sizes, and even some techniques are different for kids than for adults.

Parent Tip: A first aid kit only helps if you can find it fast. Keep one in your home where everyone in the family knows it lives, one in your car, and a smaller version in the diaper bag or backpack. The single most common mistake I see in my classes is parents who own a kit but have never opened it. Take 10 minutes to look through yours, know what is inside, and replace anything that has been used or expired. The next time you need it, you will not have time to read instructions.

What Belongs in a Children's First Aid Kit

• Adhesive bandages in multiple sizes for cuts and scrapes(look for fabric when you have the option)
• Sterile gauze pads and rolled gauze for larger wounds
• Medical tape to secure dressings (look for paper tape to avoid allergies)
• Disposable gloves to protect against infection (look for nitrile to avoid latex allergies)
• Antiseptic wipes or solution for cleaning wounds (Saline is a nice addition)
• Antibiotic ointment
• Tweezers for splinters or tick removal (Make sure they are stainless and durable)
• Trauma shears for cutting clothing or bandages (Make sure they are large enough to cut through clothing and not just bandages)
• Instant cold pack for bumps and sprains
• Elastic wrap for sprains and joint support 
• CPR face shield or CPR Mask for safe rescue breathing
• Emergency blanket for shock or cold exposure
• A pediatric first aid quick reference guide
  

Why It Matters: Most childhood injuries are small but stressful in the moment. Having the right supplies within reach turns a chaotic scramble into a calm response, which is exactly what a hurt child needs from their parent. A well stocked kit also gives you the right tools for the more serious situations: controlling bleeding, immobilizing an injury, or supporting a child while you wait for paramedics. The kit does not replace training, but it makes training usable.
