Spina Bifida
Definition: A birth defect where the spine and spinal cord do not form properly before birth. Spina bifida ranges from mild forms that cause few or no symptoms to more severe forms that can affect mobility, bladder and bowel function, and overall development. Children with spina bifida often work with a team of specialists throughout their lives.
Parent Tip: If you are caring for a child with spina bifida, your medical team is the best source for day to day care guidance. For everyday safety and emergencies, the main things every caregiver should know are: where to find the child's medication list, what their normal baseline is (mobility, bladder schedule, signs of shunt problems if they have one), and who to call first. Safety Considerations for Caregivers
- Know whether the child has a ventricular shunt (a tube that drains fluid from the brain). Signs of shunt malfunction include headache, vomiting, drowsiness, or behavior changes and require immediate medical attention
- Children with spina bifida often have latex allergies. Use latex free gloves, bandages, and supplies, including in first aid kits
- Pressure sores can develop quickly in children with limited sensation. Watch for redness or skin breakdown
- Bladder catheterization schedules are important and should be followed consistently
- Keep a current list of medications, doses, and the child's specialist contact information
