Poison Control

Definition: A free, confidential, 24/7 phone service that gives expert guidance when a child has swallowed, inhaled, or been exposed to something potentially harmful. The national number in the United States is 1-800-222-1222, and it connects you to a nurse or pharmacist trained specifically in poisoning emergencies.

Parent Tip: Save the Poison Control number in your phone right now before you ever need it: 1-800-222-1222. When you call, have the product container in your hand if possible, plus your child's age and weight, and the time the exposure happened. Poison Control will tell you whether to watch at home, head to urgent care, or call 911 and most calls end with reassurance that no further action is needed. You are never bothering them. That's their entire job. When I was building the first aid guide that comes with our children's kits, I reached out to Poison Control directly for help on the poisoning section, they responded quickly, were genuinely helpful, and clearly take their role seriously. They want to hear from parents. If you are not sure, it is always better to call 911, they can actually 3 way patch you into a conversation with Poison Control. 

Why It Matters: Most childhood poisoning calls, whether it's a swallowed medication, a sip of cleaner, a bite of a plant, or a possible THC edible  do not actually require an ER visit. Calling Poison Control first can save you a stressful, expensive trip while still making sure your child is safe. The exception: if your child is unconscious, having trouble breathing, having a seizure, or you cannot wake them, call 911 first.
