Kids: Why Pediatric First Aid Is Different
Definition: A general term for children from infancy through the teenage years. In emergency medicine and first aid, "kids" matters because children are not just small adults. Their bodies respond differently to injury, illness, and emergencies, and the right techniques, equipment, and dosing all vary by age and size.
Parent Tip: The biggest mistake well meaning adults make in a pediatric emergency is applying adult techniques to a child without adjusting. The hand position for CPR is different for an infant than a child than an adult. The dose of any medication is based on weight, not age. The signs of trouble breathing look different in a child who compensates much longer than an adult. Every parent should know the pediatric specific versions of basic first aid, because the standard adult techniques can do harm when used on a child.
Key Pediatric Differences Every Parent Should Know
- Smaller airways: A child's airway is the diameter of a drinking straw, which is why choking and respiratory illness can become emergencies faster
- Higher heart and breathing rates: What is "normal" for a baby is "alarming" for an adult, and vice versa
- Thinner skin: Children burn faster and more deeply than adults at the same temperature exposure
- Higher body surface area to weight ratio: Kids lose heat and become dehydrated faster than adults
- Different CPR technique: Hand position, depth, and breath ratio change by age
- Different choking response: Infants get back blows and chest thrusts. Children over 1 get back blows and abdominal thrusts (AHA 2025)
- Weight based medication: Always check dose with a doctor or pharmacist before giving any medication to a child
- Pediatric AED pads: Used for children under 8 or 55 pounds when available
- Tourniquets: Generally used on children over age 2 in major bleeding emergencies
Why It Matters: Generic first aid courses often focus on adults and add pediatric information as a footnote. That is not enough when your child is the one who needs help. Pediatric specific training, pediatric specific equipment, and pediatric specific knowledge are what actually save kids' lives. This is the foundation The Life Safety Pro is built on: that parents deserve real, child specific guidance and equipment, not a watered down adult version.

Designed by a Firefighter & Paramedic
First aid kits built by a paramedic, for the parents who never want to be caught unprepared.
Calm, organized, child-focused kits for the everyday emergencies families actually face. Built from real field experience, not a generic supply bag.
You're not failing. The kits are.
Most first aid kits are built for offices or stuffed with filler that has nothing to do with a child. As a paramedic, I have seen how fast a calm afternoon turns into a scary one. You should never have to wonder whether the kit in your hand has what your child actually needs.
Hi, I'm Jeremy. I built this for my family first.
I am a firefighter and paramedic, and I teach pediatric CPR and First Aid. I have run the calls and seen what families actually need in the moments that matter. So I built a kit I would trust for my own kids, organized, practical, and free of the filler that fills most kits.
