Hematoma

Definition: A hematoma is a collection of blood that forms outside of blood vessels, usually caused by an injury that damages small blood vessels under the skin. It often looks like a firm or swollen bruise.

Parent Tip: A small hematoma after a bump or fall is usually not dangerous. Use a cold pack for short periods during the first 24 hours and watch for increasing pain, swelling, or changes in behavior, loss of consciousness, vomiting multiple time —especially if the injury is on the head. If you notice these signs seek medical attention immediately.

Why It Matters: Most hematomas heal on their own, but large or rapidly growing ones can signal deeper injury. Head-related hematomas may sometimes be linked to more serious trauma that needs medical evaluation.
