Carbon Monoxide (CO)

Definition: Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be produced by fires and fuel-burning sources. Breathing it can make a person very sick or cause unconsciousness.

Parent Tip: Place carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and near sleeping areas. If you have an integral garage, make sure you have one close. If an alarm sounds, get everyone outside to fresh air right away and call 911.

Why It Matters: Carbon monoxide can overwhelm a child without warning. Knowing the risk helps you respond quickly before it becomes a life-threatening emergency.
