LifeVac Anti-Choking Device for Kids & Adults | Choking Rescue Device
LifeVac Choking Rescue Device — Home Kit
What it is: A non-powered suction device designed to help clear an airway obstruction when standard choking rescue techniques haven't worked. It comes with an adult mask, a pediatric mask, a practice mask, and step-by-step instructions.
A Paramedic's Take on the LifeVac
I want to be straightforward with you about this device, because that's what I'd want if our roles were reversed.
Choking is one of the scariest things a parent can witness. A child goes silent, can't cough, can't cry — and you have seconds to act. The first thing you should always do is follow standard choking protocol: 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts (or chest thrusts for infants). Call 911. Keep going. These techniques work the vast majority of the time.
But what happens when they don't?
That's where the LifeVac comes in. It's a second-line rescue tool — meaning you use it when back blows and abdominal thrusts have failed and the obstruction is still there. It creates suction that can pull a lodged object out of the airway when your hands alone couldn't do it.
LifeVac is now the first and only FDA-authorized suction anti-choking device as a second-line treatment. It has been used in real emergencies — including on infants, toddlers, children, adults, and elderly patients — with documented saves. It's supported by peer-reviewed medical studies and trusted by families, caregivers, schools, and medical professionals worldwide.
How It Works
It's simple. Three steps.
- Place the mask over the person's nose and mouth to create a seal. Choose the pediatric mask for children or the adult mask for adults. The mask should cover the mouth and nose completely.
- Push the handle down. This compresses air inside the device. A patented one-way valve ensures that air exits out the sides — it will never push an object further into the airway.
- Pull the handle up in a quick, firm motion. This creates suction that dislodges the obstruction. This is what you really need to focus on as its actively working to dislodge the object.
That's it. No batteries. No special training required (although I suggest you get use to holding the mask appropriate on the face, if you do not get a good seal if will make it difficult to dislodge the object). No expiration date on the device itself (though masks should be replaced every 2–3 years). If you mask has become deflated, please let me know we can order new ones for you.
The kit also includes a practice mask so you can get comfortable with the push-pull motion and getting a good seal on the face, before you ever need it. I'd encourage you to practice once or twice when it arrives — it takes 30 seconds and you'll feel a lot more confident having it in your hands.

Who Should Have One
Honestly? Anyone who has children in their life or cares for someone at higher risk of choking.
- Parents and grandparents — especially with toddlers who put everything in their mouths
- Babysitters and nannies
- Daycare centers, preschools, and schools
- Anyone caring for elderly family members — choking risk increases significantly with age
- People who live alone — the LifeVac can be self-administered in an emergency
I keep one in my home. Not because I expect to need it — but because if I ever do, I want it within reach.
Important: This Is a Second-Line Tool
I want to be clear because this matters: the LifeVac does not replace learning proper choking response techniques. Always start with back blows and abdominal thrusts first. Always call 911.
The LifeVac is there for the moment when those techniques haven't worked and you need another option. Think of it as a backup plan — and a good one.
If you haven't taken a CPR and First Aid class, I'd strongly encourage it. Knowing what to do in those first seconds before you reach for any device is the most important skill you can have. I teach pediatric CPR and First Aid classes in the Pittsburgh area — you can learn more here.
Pair It With the Right Kit
The LifeVac handles choking. But cuts, scrapes, burns, and bleeding need their own supplies. If you're building out your family's safety setup, take a look at our children's first aid kits:
- Children's First Aid Kit (Medium) — everyday essentials for home, car, and travel
- Family First Aid Kit (Large) — includes hemostatic gauze, tourniquet supplies, and more advanced gear
Between a LifeVac and the right first aid kit, you're covering the two most common childhood emergencies: choking and bleeding.
