What it is: A non-powered suction device designed to help clear an airway obstruction when standard choking rescue techniques haven't worked. It comes with an adult mask, a pediatric mask, a practice mask, and step-by-step instructions. LifeVac is labeled for choking victims 1 year and older.

A Paramedic's Take on the LifeVac

I want to be straightforward with you about this device, because that's what I'd want if our roles were reversed.

Choking is one of the scariest things a parent can witness. A child goes silent, can't cough, can't cry, and you have seconds to act. The first thing you should always do is call 911 and follow standard choking protocol for the person's age: 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts for children and adults, or 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts for infants. Keep going. These techniques often work.

But what happens when they don't?

That's where the LifeVac comes in. It's a second-line rescue tool, meaning you use it when standard choking protocol has failed and the obstruction is still there. It creates suction that can pull a lodged object out of the airway when your hands alone couldn't do it.

LifeVac is now the first and only FDA-authorized suction anti-choking device as a second-line treatment. It has been used in reported real-world choking emergencies in children, adults, and elderly patients. FDA authorization is based on the device's reviewed indications, testing, labeling, benefits, and risks. Results cannot be guaranteed in every emergency.

How It Works

It's simple. Three steps.

  1. Place the mask over the person's nose and mouth to create a seal. Choose the pediatric mask for children or the adult mask for adults. The mask should cover the mouth and nose completely.
  2. Push the handle down. A patented one-way valve lets air exit out the sides, so the device is designed not to push air into the airway.
  3. Pull the handle up in a quick, firm motion. This creates the suction that dislodges the obstruction. This is the step to really focus on, because it's the one actively working to pull the object out.

That's it. No batteries. It's designed for everyday people to use, and I strongly recommend reviewing the instructions and practicing proper mask placement. When you practice, pay attention to your seal: if you don't get a good seal, it will be harder to dislodge the object. The device itself has no expiration date, though the masks should be replaced every 2 to 3 years. If your mask has become deflated, please let me know and we can order new ones for you.

The kit also includes a practice mask so you can get comfortable with the push-pull motion and getting a good seal on the face before you ever need it. I'd encourage you to practice once or twice when it arrives. It takes 30 seconds, and you'll feel a lot more confident having it in your hands.

What's Included

  • LifeVac suction device with patented one-way valve
  • Adult mask
  • Pediatric mask (for children 1 year and older)
  • Practice mask
  • Instructions for use and choking prevention tips

Who Should Have One

Honestly? Anyone who has children in their life or cares for someone at higher risk of choking.

  • Parents and grandparents, especially with toddlers who put everything in their mouths
  • Babysitters and nannies
  • Daycare centers, preschools, and schools
  • Anyone caring for elderly family members, since choking risk increases with age

I keep one in my home. Not because I expect to need it, but because if I ever do, I want it within reach.

Important: This Is a Second-Line Tool

I want to be clear, because this matters: the LifeVac does not replace learning proper choking response techniques. Always call 911, and always start with standard choking protocol for the person's age.

The LifeVac is there for the moment when those techniques haven't worked and you need another option. Think of it as a backup plan, and a good one.

If you haven't taken a CPR and First Aid class, I'd strongly encourage it. Knowing what to do in those first seconds, before you reach for any device, is the most important skill you can have. I teach pediatric CPR and First Aid classes in the Pittsburgh area. You can learn more here.

Pair It With the Right Kit

The LifeVac handles choking. But cuts, scrapes, burns, and bleeding need their own supplies. If you're building out your family's safety setup, take a look at our children's first aid kits:

Between a LifeVac and the right first aid kit, you're ready for two of the most urgent childhood emergencies: choking and bleeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can LifeVac be used on a baby under 1?

No. LifeVac is labeled for choking victims 1 year and older. For a baby under 1, call 911 and give 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts, repeating until the object comes out or the baby becomes unresponsive.

Can LifeVac be used more than once?

During the same emergency, you can repeat the push-pull motion if the object doesn't come out on the first try. After it's been used in an emergency, the device shouldn't be reused for sanitary reasons. LifeVac replaces it for free when you report the use on their website.

What's the difference between the Home Kit and the Travel Kit?

Both are $69.99 and include the same LifeVac device with adult and pediatric masks. The Home Kit adds a practice mask. The Travel Kit skips the practice mask and comes in a zip-up bag for your car, diaper bag, or luggage. If this is your first LifeVac, start with the Home Kit.

Does LifeVac replace CPR and choking training?

No. It's a backup tool. Knowing the standard steps matters most, and my hands-on classes teach you exactly what to do.

LifeVac is the first FDA-authorized suction anti-choking device marketed in the United States as a second-line treatment for complete airway obstruction. It is intended for choking victims at least 1 year of age and is contraindicated for children under 1. Follow established choking rescue protocol first and call 911. Use LifeVac only when standard choking rescue efforts have not cleared the obstruction, following the device instructions.

YOU GOT QUESTIONS?

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can the LifeVac be used on?

LifeVac is designed for children 1 year and older (minimum 22 lbs / 10 kg) and adults. It includes both a pediatric mask and an adult mask.

Do I use this instead of back blows and abdominal thrusts?

No. Always follow standard choking protocol first — 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts (chest thrusts for infants). Call 911. The LifeVac is a second-line tool for when those techniques haven't cleared the obstruction.

Does the LifeVac expire?

The device itself does not expire — it carries a 25-year warranty. Masks should be replaced every 2–3 years. Check them periodically for deflation. If your mask needs replacing, contact us and we'll get you a new one.

What if I use the LifeVac in an emergency?

LifeVac offers a free replacement unit if you use yours to save a life. Fill out their "Report LifeVac Usage" form on lifevac.net and they'll send a replacement at no cost. You can also contact us directly and we'll help you through the process.

Can I use the LifeVac on myself?

Yes. The LifeVac can be self-administered if you are choking and alone.

How should I store it?

Store at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme heat or cold, as that can affect the integrity of the device.

What's the difference between the Home Kit and Travel Kit?

The device is identical. The Home Kit includes a practice mask and choking prevention literature — it's designed to stay in one spot like your kitchen. The Travel Kit comes in a compact zippered bag (Yellow, Blue, or Pink) for portability but does not include the practice mask.

Can I use my HSA or FSA card?

Yes. LifeVac is eligible for HSA and FSA purchases.

Can I take the Travel Kit on a plane?

Yes. The Travel Kit is carry-on friendly and TSA safe.
