Teething
Definition: The process of new teeth pushing through a baby's gums, usually starting around 6 months old and continuing in stages until about 2 to 3 years old. Teething can cause real discomfort but does not cause high fever, severe illness, or symptoms beyond mild fussiness, drooling, and gum tenderness.
Parent Tip: Teething pain is real but manageable. Cold, firm objects like a chilled (not frozen) teething ring, a clean wet washcloth that has been refrigerated, or a chilled banana for older babies can help soothe sore gums. A clean finger gently massaging the gums can also provide relief. If your baby is over 6 months old and your pediatrician approves, weight appropriate doses of acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help with significant discomfort. Avoid the things that look like they should help but actually cause harm.
What NOT to Use for Teething
- Teething necklaces or amber jewelry: A strangulation and choking hazard with no proven benefit
- Benzocaine gels (Orajel, Anbesol): The FDA warns against using these in children under 2 because they can cause a serious blood disorder
- Homeopathic teething tablets: Have been recalled in the past for inconsistent ingredient levels
- Frozen teething rings: Too hard and cold for sensitive gums. Refrigerated is plenty
- Rubbing alcohol or whiskey on the gums: An old wives' tale that is genuinely dangerous to babies
When to Call the Doctor
- Fever over 100.4F in a baby under 3 months
- Fever over 102F at any age
- Diarrhea or vomiting (these are not normal teething symptoms)
- Persistent rash beyond mild drool rash on the chin
- Refusing to eat or drink
- Excessive crying that cannot be soothed
Why It Matters: Teething often gets blamed for symptoms that are actually unrelated illness, which can lead parents to miss something more serious. High fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and rashes are not caused by teething. If your baby has these symptoms, treat them as a possible illness and call your pediatrician. Knowing the difference between teething and a real illness saves you from worry on one side and from missing something important on the other.
